Fundraising

On September 17, 2011, The Miracle for Michael Fundraiser was held at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Redondo Beach, CA and was an enormous success.   The outpouring of donations, monetary gifts and volunteers who donated their time and talents in so many ways from working booths, cooking food, handling credit card transactions, driving shuttles, and performing music; as well as all the behind the scenes work that went into setting and cleaning up was overwhelming to say the least.  It truly was a blessing and we cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness and generosity.  We far exceeded our hopes of what we would raised that day, making over $26,000.00 during the fundraiser and an additional $1,800.00 from ticket sales at the Comedy Magic Club in Hermosa Beach on October 26, 2011.

Now we would like to share what we have been able to do to help Michael move forward in his recovery since that wonderful day.

First and foremost, we have been able to stay in our home by putting a portion of the monies toward our monthly living expenses; including Michael’s co-payments for his medications and therapies.   In terms of rehabilitation for Michael, our greatest success was achieving our goal of getting the Gait Harness System.   This device allows Michael to work on improving his standing, gait, and balance in an effort to learn how to walk again.   The belt around Michael’s waist, which attaches to the device and the straps around his legs, secures him in a way that other devices do not; giving him a safe environment in which to learn how to walk.  It also allows caregivers to safely work with Michael on other activities such as practicing proper posture, balance exercises, and throwing and catching a ball.  Practicing how to walk and doing physical exercise is Michael’s favorite kind of therapy so needless to say, he loves the gait harness system.

The money that we raised also allowed us to pursue some non-conventional treatments and therapies, which are not covered by our insurance.

DOCTORS

In November of 2011, Michael began seeing  an Osteopathic Doctor certified to practice cranial osteopathy.  The treatment is non-invasive and uses no conventional medicine.  During a session, the doctor works on different lobes of Michael’s brain by using a hands-on treatment of the cranium to enable the body to heal itself.  He also uses this type of treatment to work on getting more movement in Michael’s tongue and has done work on Michael’s neck to relieve the tension and increase his limited range of motion.

Along with his Osteopathic Doctor, Michael recently began to see a Speech Pathologist who also is certified in Myofunctional Therapy.  As a Myofunctional Therapist, much of her work concentrates on correcting the improper function of the tongue and facial muscles as all of these muscles need to work together in harmony in order for proper chewing and swallowing to occur.  While Michael still needs much improvement on his speech, this added therapy can benefit him tremendously.  Not only will learning how to move his tongue properly help his speech, it will also help to prevent other challenges that often occur with the improper use of the tongue, such as choking, digestive problems, drooling, and TMJ.

THERAPIES

Michael continues to have semi-annual eye exams from his neuro-opthomologist. This past fall we were able to purchase prescription glasses with special prism lenses to help stimulate his eyes to lift upward when looking at a distance.

In addition to these treatments, we were also able to purchase an IPAD for Michael.  The IPAD offers stimulation for Michael’s eyes, which enables him to keep them open for longer periods of time, through such things as interactive games, organizing pictures, typing notes and scheduling appointments.  Using the touch keyboard is also very beneficial in terms of improving Michael’s fine motor skills.

Just 8 months ago, we only dreamed of having the gait harness system let alone the therapies Michael is now involved in and yet here we are.  It was not by our own effort and financial means.  We could have never given Michael all the help and opportunities that he now receives.  Our dreams came true and our prayers were answered because of the love, support, and generous donations from so many.  We will continue to push forward and with the help of your prayers and the grace of God, we will watch as new opportunities open up for Michael on his road to recovery.
